How do I know if I need a french drain or just regrading?

Sometimes the ground simply falls toward the house and the fix is grading, which is cheaper. Justin looks at where the water comes from and where it can go before recommending either.

Where does the water end up?

To daylight at a lower point, into a ditch, or into an existing storm outlet. If there is nowhere legitimate for it to go, a drain will not work and you should be told that up front.

Will you tear up my whole yard?

A drain is a trench, so there is disturbance along the line. The route is planned with you first, and the ground is put back and graded when the pipe is in.
