Drainage & French Drains in Tulsa
Most yard drainage calls in Tulsa are not about one puddle. They are about a back yard that stays wet for days after a storm, a side yard that funnels the neighbour's runoff toward a slab, or a lawn that has gone soft around a downspout. The ground here is heavy clay, so water that lands in the wrong place tends to stay there until something gives it a route out.
Tulsa has a long history with water. The City's own flooding history calls the 1984 Memorial Day flood its worst disaster, with Mingo Creek hit hardest, and the City still publishes a list of streets that flood in heavy rain, from 39th and Yale to stretches of Mingo Road. Yard drainage will not fix a creek, but it does decide whether your lot sheds water toward the street and the storm system or holds it against the house.
The work is dirt work: regrading a yard so it falls away from the foundation, cutting a swale to carry runoff around a house or shop, running a French drain or surface drain to an outlet, or rebuilding a ditch and culvert so it carries again. For French drain installation on its own, see the French drain page. This page is about the yard as a whole.
Earthworks by Justin is owner-operated. Justin is the person who walks the yard with you and the person running the machine on the day, so the plan you agreed to is the plan that goes in the ground. Call (918) 240-3392 to set up a look.
Who to call for yard drainage in Tulsa
Yard drainage sits between a few trades, which is why people are never sure who to ring. A landscaper plants and edges, a plumber handles the pipes in and under the house, and the City looks after public storm drains, streets and creeks. When the problem is the shape of the ground, or water that needs a trench and an outlet, that is dirt work, and it is the work Justin does.
The City of Tulsa is worth a call as well. Its floodplain determination page says the City has stormwater engineers available to visit and recommend ways to solve private drainage problems, and it gives an official floodplain determination at no charge through 311 if you supply the address and the subdivision, lot and block. A blocked storm inlet in your street also goes to 311, through the City's Stormwater Quality program.
What moves the cost of yard drainage in Tulsa
Every drainage job is priced after Justin has seen it, because two yards with the same puddle can need very different fixes. The biggest thing that moves the price is the fix itself: regrading a slope that falls the wrong way is a different job from trenching a drain across a whole back yard.
After that it is distance and outlet. A drain that can daylight at a low corner of the lot is shorter and simpler than one that has to travel to the street or a ditch. Access counts in the older midtown neighbourhoods such as Maple Ridge and Brookside, where lots are tight, trees are mature and a machine may only fit through one gate. Roots, rock, walks and old lines in the way all add time, and so does the sod and ground that has to be put back. The French drain cost guide goes further into it.
Grading, swales or a drain: what works in a Tulsa yard
Often the simplest fix is the shape of the ground. If the yard falls toward the house, regrading so it falls away, or cutting a shallow swale around the house, can move the water with no pipe at all. When the ground is flat, the water comes from under the surface, or there is no room to reshape it, a French drain or a surface drain gives the water a route instead.
Whatever goes in has to end somewhere legitimate: daylight at a lower point, a ditch, or an existing storm outlet. If there is nowhere for the water to go, you should hear that at the walk-through. The guide to drainage problems in Tulsa yards covers the warning signs, and roof water has its own page on underground downspout drainage.
Permits and locates before a Tulsa yard is dug
Inside Tulsa city limits, the City's Infrastructure Development division lists earth change, grading and regrading among the work that needs a Watershed Development Permit before it starts, and lots on or next to a regulatory floodplain are reviewed by the City's Floodplain Administrator. Ask through 311 or Development Services what your job needs before a date is set, and confirm it rather than assuming either way. Before a trench is cut, buried lines get marked through OKIE811.

Who should I call for yard drainage in Tulsa?
For the shape of the ground, swales, drains and outlets, a dirt contractor such as Justin. For a blocked street inlet or a floodplain question, call the City on 311. For pipes inside or under the house, a plumber.
What moves the cost of fixing yard drainage in Tulsa?
The fix chosen, the distance to a legitimate outlet, access into the yard, and what is in the way. Justin prices it after walking the yard, and if regrading will do the job instead of a drain, that is what gets quoted.
Will regrading my Tulsa yard stop the water for good?
Grading that falls away from the house moves most everyday rain where it should go. A very heavy storm can still overwhelm any yard, and Tulsa gets those, so the aim is a route that carries water away from the house rather than a promise it disappears.
Can drainage between my Tulsa yard and the neighbour's be fixed?
Often the fix sits on your side of the line. If water would be sent onto a neighbour or into the street, ask the City through 311 first, and the route gets planned with that in mind.
How soon can you look at a Tulsa yard that holds water?
Call (918) 240-3392 or send the form with the address and a photo or short video of the water. Justin sets up a time to walk it with you.
Other work he takes on
