Driveways in Sand Springs

Sand Springs, founded by oilman Charles Page, is mostly in Tulsa County but reaches into Osage and Creek counties as well. It sits on the Arkansas River with Keystone Lake just to the west and Skiatook Lake to the north. US-412 and OK-51 carry traffic east and west through town and OK-97 runs north and south, and off those roads the ground climbs into wooded hills.

Hills change everything about a gravel drive. On flat ground the risk is water sitting on the drive. On a slope it is water running down the drive and taking the rock with it. Every steep drive in Sand Springs needs a way to turn the water off before it builds speed, and a base firm enough that the surface does not slide on it.

Most driveway calls here are new drives cut up a slope to a house or a building site in the hills, and washouts on existing drives that have lost their surface down the steepest stretch. Both come down to grade, base and getting water off the drive in the right places.

Earthworks by Justin is owner-operated, and the estimate is free and done on site. Call (918) 240-3392 or use the form on this page.

Stopping washouts on a sloped Sand Springs drive

A washout is water using the drive as a channel. The fix is to give the water somewhere else to go before it gets there: a crown so it runs to the sides, ditches along the edge, and points along the drive where it is turned off into the ground beside it. Then the washed section gets rebuilt with base that is compacted rather than loose rock tipped back in.

If only the steepest stretch has washed and the rest is holding, that stretch gets rebuilt and the water gets dealt with above it. The gravel driveway repair page covers repairs across the Tulsa area in more detail.

New drives into wooded, hilly lots

The wooded hills around Sand Springs are cross timbers country, the same oak forest the Keystone Ancient Forest preserve protects. A new drive there often starts with clearing a route through brush and small timber, then cutting the grade so it climbs at a pace a loaded truck can manage, then basing and crowning it.

Rock in the ground is common in this part of the county, which can change how the grade gets cut and what the drive costs. The gravel driveway cost guide explains how slope, rock, length and drainage move the price.

Three counties and who to ask before entrance work

Because Sand Springs reaches into Tulsa, Osage and Creek counties, who you ask depends on where the drive meets the road. Inside city limits, ask the City of Sand Springs. Outside the city, ask the county the property is in. Confirm it for your address before a date is set.

An OKIE811 locate request is made before any digging. When runoff from the hill is soaking the yard as well as tearing up the drive, the Sand Springs drainage page covers that work, and it can be priced in the same visit.

Why does my Sand Springs gravel drive wash out on the hill every time it storms?

Water is running down the drive instead of off it. Until the water is turned to the sides with a crown, ditches and turn-outs, new rock on the slope will wash the same way the old rock did.

Can you cut a new gravel drive up a steep wooded lot near Sand Springs?

Usually. The route gets cleared, the grade gets cut so trucks can climb it, and the drive is based and crowned. Justin looks at the slope and the ground before quoting.

Does rock in the ground change the cost of a drive in Sand Springs?

It can. Rock changes how the grade is cut and how long it takes. It is one of the things Justin looks at on site before putting a number on the job.

My Sand Springs property is in Osage County. Who do I ask about the driveway entrance?

Outside city limits, ask Osage County. Inside the city, ask the City of Sand Springs. Confirm what applies to your address before the work is scheduled.
