Driveways in Bixby

Bixby is split into north and south halves by the Arkansas River and reaches across two counties, Tulsa and Wagoner. The town calls itself the Garden Spot of Oklahoma, a name it took in 1941, because of the rich and sometimes swampy river bottom land that drew farmers here in the first place. Much of that farm ground later went to sod, and more of it now goes to new houses, shops and acreage.

That history is what a driveway has to deal with. River bottom soil holds water, and flat farm ground gives it no reason to leave. A gravel drive laid straight onto that ground ruts in the first wet spring. A drive that lasts is built up on a compacted base, crowned so water leaves the surface, and given side ditches and culverts so the water keeps moving once it does.

Most Bixby driveway calls are long runs: a drive back to a house set off the road, out to a shop or barn, or across acreage to a building site. The rest are repairs to drives that were put in thin and have since gone soft.

Gravel drives on river bottom ground in Bixby

The soil that made Bixby good farm country is hard on a gravel drive. It stays wet longer than upland ground, and it softens under weight when it is wet. A drive built on it needs more attention to the base and to drainage than the same drive on a hillside would.

The approach is simple even if the work is not: get the drive up out of the wet, compact a base that will carry the traffic, shape a crown, and make sure the side ditches lead somewhere. Where the yard around the drive is the real problem, that is a Bixby drainage job and can be priced in the same visit.

Drives to shops, barns and acreage around Bixby

A long drive to a shop or barn on old farm ground sees heavier traffic than a house drive: trailers, deliveries and equipment. The base gets built for that, and turnarounds or a gravel parking area at the building can go in at the same time.

If the drive is going in ahead of a new building, it is usually cut in first so the builder can get trucks to the site. The Bixby service area page covers the pad and the rest of the site work, and the gravel driveway cost guide explains what moves the price of the drive.

Bixby entrances, culverts and who to ask

On a long rural drive the entrance does the most work. If the ditch at the road does not carry, the approach washes every time it rains. Cleaning out or resetting the culvert is part of the job when that is the cause.

Before any entrance work, ask the City of Bixby what applies inside city limits. Outside the city, ask the county the property sits in, Tulsa County or Wagoner County. Confirm it for your address before a date is set. An OKIE811 locate request is made before any digging.

Why do gravel drives on Bixby farm ground go soft so quickly?

River bottom soil holds water and softens under weight when it is wet. If the drive was laid straight on it with a thin layer of rock, it ruts. A drive built up on a compacted base with a crown and side ditches holds up far better.

Can you build a gravel drive out to a barn on my Bixby acreage?

Yes. The drive gets laid out with you, based for the trucks and trailers that will use it, and a turnaround or parking area at the barn can go in at the same time.

My property is on the Wagoner County side of Bixby. Who do I ask about the entrance?

Inside Bixby city limits, the City of Bixby. Outside them, Wagoner County for that side. Confirm what applies to your address before the work is scheduled.

Should the drive go in before or after a new building in Bixby?

Usually before. A firm drive lets the builder get trucks to the site without rutting the ground, and it gets touched up at the end if construction traffic has worn it.
