Driveways in Tulsa
Tulsa is the seat of Tulsa County and spreads across both sides of the Arkansas River, from older lots in town out to acreage with long private drives on every edge of the city. The repair calls look different depending on where you are. In town it is usually a short drive that has gone soft and rutted. Out toward the county line it is a long run of gravel to a house, a shop or a barn with low spots, washouts and an entrance that falls apart every spring.
Rain in Tulsa is heaviest in late spring, with May the wettest month on average, and the spring storms that come through bring heavy downpours with them. Then late June through August is often dry and the same drive turns to dust and loose rock. A gravel surface that was never based or crowned right does not survive that swing. Water sits in the low spots, traffic pushes the rock aside, and the pothole is back a week after somebody fills it.
That is why a real repair starts below the surface. The failed area gets cut out down to sound material, the base is rebuilt and compacted, and the top is shaped with a crown so water runs off the sides instead of down the middle. If the problem is water arriving from somewhere else, that gets dealt with in the same visit, because rebuilding the surface and leaving the cause in place just buys a few months.

Why a gravel driveway keeps failing in the same spots
Almost every gravel drive that needs repair has the same two problems in some mix. Either the base underneath was thin or never compacted, so the surface rock gets pressed into the dirt every time a vehicle crosses it, or the water has nowhere to go and sits on the drive until it softens the ground. Usually it is a bit of both.
You can tell a lot from where the damage is. Potholes in the middle of a flat drive point to a missing crown. Ruts where you turn or park point to a thin base. A washout running down the drive on a slope means water is using it as a channel. Damage at the entrance usually means the ditch or culvert at the road is not carrying. Each one is fixed differently, which is why the drive gets looked at before anyone quotes it.
Patch the bad spots or rebuild the whole gravel drive
Plenty of drives do not need a full rebuild. If the approach and a couple of low spots have failed and the rest is holding, those areas get cut out and rebuilt and that is what gets quoted. There is no point paying to redo a stretch that is working.
A drive that has failed end to end is different. When the base has gone everywhere, patching just moves the problem around. In that case the drive gets regraded, rebased and crowned from the road to the house, and any ditching gets reshaped along the way. If an old concrete drive is being replaced with gravel, the concrete can be broken out and hauled off first. The gravel driveway installation page covers new drives, and the gravel driveway cost guide explains what moves the price of either job.
Tulsa rain, runoff and getting water off the drive
Tulsa has one of the most extensive flood control systems in the country, and FEMA has recognised the city for its flood plain management. None of that helps a private gravel drive that sits lower than the yard next to it. On your own property, the water has to be moved off the drive by the drive itself: a crown, a ditch along the side, and an outlet at the low end.
When runoff from a roof, a neighbour or the hill above is what keeps tearing the drive up, the repair might include a swale or a drain to turn that water before it reaches the gravel. The yard drainage page covers that side of the work when it is a bigger problem than the drive alone.
Approaches, culverts and the street side of the drive
The entrance is where most drives fail first, because it takes every turn and every bit of water coming off the road. Rebuilding it often means resetting or cleaning out the culvert under the approach so the ditch carries again.
Work at the edge of a public street or a county road can involve the people who own it. Inside the city, ask the City of Tulsa Permit Center in Development Services what applies before a date is set. Outside the city limits, ask Tulsa County. Confirm it for your address rather than assuming either way. If any digging is involved, an OKIE811 locate request is made first so buried lines are marked.

What that covers
- Pothole repair cut out to sound base, not just topped up
- Rutted and soft sections rebuilt and compacted
- Washouts on slopes and at the bottom of hills rebuilt
- Crown restored so water sheds to the sides
- Ditches and side drainage reshaped so they carry water
- Entrances and culvert approaches put back in shape
- Spot repairs where only part of the drive has failed

Why do potholes in my Tulsa gravel driveway come back after I fill them?
Because filling a hole does not fix why it formed. If the base is soft or water sits in that spot, new rock gets pushed down and scattered just like the old rock. The spot has to be cut out, rebased and crowned so water leaves it.
Can you fix just the washed-out section at the bottom of my drive?
Often, yes. If the rest of the drive is holding, the washout gets rebuilt and the water that caused it gets turned so it does not come straight back. Justin will tell you if the problem runs further up than it looks.
Is it worth repairing a gravel drive in Tulsa or should it be redone?
It depends on how much of the base has failed. A few bad areas are a repair. A drive that is soft and rutted from end to end usually needs regrading and new base. That gets decided on site, not over the phone.
Who do I ask about work on the driveway entrance at a Tulsa street?
Inside city limits, the City of Tulsa Permit Center in Development Services; outside them, Tulsa County. Ask before a date is set so the entrance work is done the way the road owner expects.
